Oversized Parcel Solutions: Inside Journey of Developing Our Latest Parcel Locker, Cleveron 355

“How do we deliver a wardrobe in a parcel locker?”

Questions like this led to the birth of Cleveron 17 years ago, and as we grow in the industry, we continue to ask ourselves more questions. While we solved out-of-home deliveries with a wide range of solutions, the product size was still a constraint. We wanted to build a solution for items that don’t traditionally fit into parcel lockers; retail stores like home furnishing, DIY equipment, and electrical product rentals could benefit the most from this by being able to fit oversized parcels in traditional parcel locker space. It led us to our newest parcel locker solution—Cleveron 355, a parcel locker designed to tackle the growing demand for oversized deliveries. After a development process of four years, multiple design iterations, and a strong commitment to local craftsmanship, we’re proud to introduce a game-changer in parcel lockers. With deeper compartments and a flexible configuration, this solution is tailor-made for DIY, home decor, and furniture retailers.

The journey of developing this parcel locker began in 2020 as more retailers and delivery services faced the growing problem of delivering larger and bulkier items. Offering out-of-home delivery through the traditional parcel locker terminals was impossible. The need for larger compartments became more apparent, and it was clear that a more flexible and scalable solution was required. 

From an idea to reality 

The product development for the Cleveron 355 – locker for oversized parcels started in early 2023 when we started prototyping and testing initial designs. By June of that year, our small team of engineers and technical experts had produced the first design ready for internal review. This was not just any locker—it was a solution meticulously designed with oversized parcels in mind. Our target was clear: to make it easier for retailers dealing with items like home furnishings, DIY equipment, and larger decor pieces to offer the same click-and-collect convenience their customers expect from smaller deliveries.

It took two significant iterations to get the product right. With both iterations, we witnessed some execution challenges and essential feedback from testers. There were many things to consider, from refining the depth configurations to optimising the structural design for a seamless fit with our existing lockers. However, this allowed the final product to emerge as the perfect balance between form and function.

Designed with Flexibility in Mind

This new locker’s dual-depth configuration sets it apart from anything else in the market. We created two compartment depths to accommodate a range of oversized parcels that traditionally wouldn’t fit into standard locker systems. Traditionally, our parcel lockers maintain the industry standard of having approximately 1.3 meters of depth, but with Cleveron 355, we have also introduced the option of having a depth of 2.6 meters. We have also made adjustments to the slot height now and there can be slots with a maximum height of 1800mm, which offers retailers the option to store bulky and tall items effectively. Whether it’s a flat-packed piece of furniture, a piece of bulky DIY equipment or even an outdoor pressure washer, these lockers offer retailers the flexibility to deliver an exceptional click-and-collect experience. Choosing a flexible option is not just about convenience. It’s about ensuring retailers can offer reliable out-of-home delivery options for oversized parcel deliveries. 

Another difficultly with delivering oversized items in parcel lockers is that packages that are heavy would be difficult to store in lockers. With the new Cleveron 355, the bottom rack is designed so that you can customize your parcel locker with a plinth or without one. If the parcel locker is without a floor, it has no weight restrictions, and the ones with a floor can hold up to 200 kgs in the bottom-most compartment. Even the lockers above it can hold up to 100 kgs of weight. Our traditional lockers have the industry standard capacity of holding approximately 31.5 kgs of weight.

When the parcel lockers are used with Cleveron’s software solution, our customers can customise the delivery experience to fit their operations and handling processes, allowing them to tailor Cleveron 355 to their needs. 

One key advantage of considering the Cleveron 355 parcel locker is that it can seamlessly integrate with other Cleveron lockers. The installation is fast, as the lockers are transported in a pre-assembled module. Cleveron 355 can be easily added to a Cleveron 352 parcel locker of the same depth. Its dual-depth offering allows us to expand existing lockers by adding a depth-increasing module. This scalability offers businesses a more cost-effective way to enhance their delivery capabilities without compromising efficiency or convenience. In essence, this is a solution built for growth.

From our inception in 2007, we made a commitment to local production cycles. The production process for the Cleveron 355 took place majorly in Estonia, using hardware materials and components sourced locally whenever possible. This approach allowed us to maintain the highest quality control levels and minimise the production’s environmental impact. By working closely with local suppliers, we were able to have a more sustainable approach to manufacturing.

Moreover, sourcing materials locally gave us greater flexibility during the development cycle. We were on a tight schedule with this development and wanted to get the product right. Despite the challenges, our technical experts pushed forward, determined to deliver a product that would be the new industry standard.
